A big feeling came like a wind, and lifted Little Bean off the floor. This is the way back down.

Sometimes a feeling comes. Not a small one — a big, fast, all-of-you feeling. It comes like a wind: it lifts, and lifts, and lifts, until Little Bean can't feel the floor. It carries Little Bean up like a leaf — far from the floor, far from the room, far from itself.

Every child knows this moment. Every parent has stood in it, not sure what to say.

Here is what doesn't happen next: nobody says calm down. Nobody says the feeling is silly, or too big, or wrong. Instead, Big Bean arrives — not pulling, not rushing — and shows Little Bean the way back into its own body, one small move at a time:

Feet on the floor. Press them down, like roots. One big breath — all the way out. Slow. Now look. Now listen. The room comes back, one thing at a time.

"I'm still here," said Little Bean.

A STORY THAT IS ALSO A TOOL

The three small moves in this book — feet, breath, look around — are real, body-based grounding steps a child can take off the page and keep. The refrain lands three times across the story, so by the last page children are saying it along: feet on the floor, big breath out, I'm still here. It works co-regulated with a grown-up at first, and slowly becomes the child's own — carried in the body long after the book is closed.

And the ending keeps its promise honest: the feeling isn't fixed away, and it isn't argued with. It simply gets smaller, until Little Bean is carrying the feeling instead of the feeling carrying Little Bean. Still a little heavy. But back.

INSIDE THE BOOK

  • A gentle 32-page story told in short, read-aloud lines, with the wind-and-roots imagery carried through every illustration
  • A repeating three-step refrain children learn by heart without trying
  • A "for grown-ups" note on why "calm down" doesn't work, and what to do instead
  • A keepsake tool page — the way back, in five small lines, to come back to on hard days

WHO IT'S FOR

For children aged 4–8 who feel everything at full size. For the wobbly drop-offs, the after-school storms, the moments before sleep when everything is suddenly too big. For parents, grandparents and carers who want something better than "calm down". For teachers, SENCOs and therapists who need a shared, simple language for coming back to steady — one that works at the kitchen table and on the classroom carpet alike.
