Set it up once. Use it every night.
Some children are not sleepy after dinner. They are at their fastest.
Little Signals at Night is a wind-down book in two halves. In the first half, made once in the daytime, your child builds their own evening — choosing their moves, finding their soft things, setting their own order. In the second half there is nothing to write. You just turn the pages, and the evening goes down, and down, and down.
It begins by letting the last of the fast out on purpose — one big go, then stop — because a wind-down that starts with quiet asks a fast body to skip a step, and skipped steps reappear at the bedside forty minutes later. From there every page is quieter than the one before it, the light going down with them, from warm water and soft clothes to heavy legs, slow breathing, busy thoughts given away till morning, and the same last words every night.
Inside:
- A make-it-yourself first half: your child's own evening, in their own order
- Games where being slower, heavier and quieter is how you win
- The handover — where busy thoughts go until morning
- The last drink and the last question, named in advance and meant
- A plan for waking in the night
- A night card to copy and keep by the bed
- A page for the leaving — for the moment the door closes
- Six pages for grown-ups on why the fast bit comes first, on stalling, and on what a wind-down can and cannot do
Nothing here promises sleep. Sleep is not a behaviour and cannot be performed on request. All any evening can do is make it more likely — and that is what this book is for.
